Hello and welcome to DIY Investing.org!
This is my first blog post, so I thought I would outline what you can expect when you visit my blog in the future. If you’re reading this, you are one of my first visitors and I am glad to have you here. I have a lot of great things planned for the site, and I hope you will join me on the journey to becoming a successful investor.
Structure of the Blog
This blog is built upon the premise that every individual is unique and each of you as readers come here for different reasons. I know that my audience will not all want to become hardcore DIY Investors. That’s not only acceptable, that’s to be commended. We all have different areas in life which we want to spend our time focused on, and investing is most certainly not something that clicks with everyone. However, my goal is provide the tools and knowledge needed for each of you to understand how investing works, and how to manage your own investment portfolio if you choose to do so. At the very least, you will be provided with methods suited for each style of investing, so that you can be happy and comfortable with your investment decisions.
You can learn more about the blog on the about the blog page.
Origins of the Blog
I have been fascinated with investing for a really long time and over the years have taught myself how to invest my own money without anyone’s help. I worked really hard at doing this, and then realized that very few people knew what they were doing with their money, let alone how to invest it and manage their own investment portfolio. For a while, I just continued to invest my own money and not worry about what others were doing. Over time, some of my friends and colleagues started to ask me questions about my investing, or showed interest in learning more. I decided that I could help out a lot more people by providing a simple, straightforward guide that anyone could access online. That is what this blog is, and my inspiration for starting it.
You can learn more about myself on the about the author page.
Types of posts you can expect
You can probably learn a lot about the types of posts that I will be posting on the site simply by looking at the different menu options at the top of the website. When I am writing this post, all of these options will lead to essentially empty pages. However, over time I hope to flesh out each of these different topics and categories with numerous posts and very useful content for you.
The site is organized by what type of investor you self designate as, and by specific topics. I will include information for beginning investors, passive investors, active investors, and the top-tier DIY Investors. One of my first upcoming posts will outline exactly how I define each of these categories so that you can figure out which category you fall into. Each of these investing categories will have guides, discussion of theory, and specific strategies tailored to that investing style. In addition, you’ll be able to expect helpful resources such as what type of accounts should you be investing in, and what brokerages you should invest with. I’ll also recommend various books to expand your knowledge outside of what you find on this blog.
I will also address important investing topics that apply across the range of investors such as: tax shelters (IRA, 401K, 403B, etc…), accumulation strategies, withdrawal strategies, tax management in taxable accounts, estate plan issues related to investments, and many more.
My focus
The focus of this blog will be almost exclusively on investing. There are literally thousands of personal finance blogs out there with great content and I have no need to replicate the work that so many people are writing. I will cover a few basics of personal finance in my first set of posts to make sure we have a foundation to work from. However, beyond that, I will write about what you need to know in order to become a successful investor.
There are many different types of investments. Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate, as well as alternative investments such as Private Businesses, Hedge Funds, Master Limited Partnerships, and even less finance related investments such as using coupons or shopping for sales.
My expertise is mainly in stocks and bonds, so I will begin there and focus on those. I will delve into the particulars of some of the other forms of investing, most particularly real estate, and some of the alternative investments as we reach the point of more advanced study, for those who wish to call themselves “DIY Investors.”
Planned posting schedule
My currently planned schedule is to post a blog post 3 times a week. I plan to have a post online every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, just in time to read after most day workers get off work.
As a new blogger, this seems like an ambitious goal for me, so I may fall short of it some weeks, but also may exceed it on others. It is possible that I will have to change this posting schedule once I learn how much time such a schedule takes. I hope you will check back regularly and learn a lot from what you read.
